Contrary to what you said in the Guardian yesterday it’s not hard to “go to Court” about unpaid internships – the cases are heard in the Employment tribunal, the forms are easy to complete & can be done online, there’s no court fee, and HM Revenue & Customs might help you – they have a minimum wage enforcement section, because it’s a tax and national insurance avoidance issue too.
Hi Tanya
I’ve just heard you on the BBC Newshour. I don’t usually comment on websites but I so strongly support you that I felt I had to! I am so against the internship culture because I have seen first hand that a lot of organisations simply want unpaid labour (I studied journalism… I know all about this…)
Furthermore, I recently volunteered for at Medicins Sans Frontieres and applied for a job during my time there. I left in disgust when I didn’t even get a response to my application – I understand that I may not have been the best applicant but I volunteered my time to them for free and honestly believe they should have granted me the respect of at least sending an email saying thanks but no thanks…
Anyway, keep up the good work!
