GRADUATE FOG KICKS OFF ‘SHAME INTERN SCROOGES’ CAMPAIGN
* WANT US TO KEEP YOU UPDATED? LIKE US ON FACEBOOK OR FOLLOW US ON TWITTER! *
Have you done your Christmas shopping yet? If not, we suggest you walk straight past JOY – the high street gift and clothing retailer – which is currently recruiting a full-time, unpaid “design intern” for a position lasting up to 12 months. Despite needing extensive skills – including knowledge of Photoshop, Illustrator and garment construction – the successful applicant will receive a measly £5 per day lunch allowance plus travel expenses for Zones 1-3. Merry Christmas to you too, JOY.
The tight-fisted store is the first employer targeted in Graduate Fog’s “Shame intern Scrooges” campaign. Every day this week, we’ll target a well-known employer, reminding skinflint bosses of their duty to pay their junior staff a fair wage for their work. Our secret list includes several high-end fashion designers, a Conservative MP and a well-known style magazine. Graduate Fog’s friends at Intern Aware will then pass the details on to HM Revenue and Customs, who last month pledged to investigate all cases forwarded on to them.

JOY’s advert states: “The successful applicant will be able to see a full season through to completion — from concept and trend boards through to colour palette creation, buying and manufacturing — following the process through to the shop floor.” (Hey – wait a second – doesn’t that sound like an actual job?). Here it is in full, posted on JOY’s own company website (Yes, they really are that dumb):

A lunch allowance of £5 per day and travel within zones 1-3 will be covered.
We are looking for the following:
Photoshop and Illustrator skills
Comp shop trips and report creation
A sound knowledge of garment construction
Great research skills
Able to multi-task
Attending fit sessions
Organisation skills
Print/textile design skills are a bonusThe successful applicant will be able to see a full season through to completion — from concept and trend boards through to colour palette creation, buying and manufacturing — following the process through to the shop floor.
Please send a CV together with examples of work including Illustrator CADS to careers@joythestore.com
Graduate Fog contacted JOY several times over the last few weeks to ask about this internship, plus three others where the salary is not stated (“PR intern”, “Buying intern” and “Menswear buying intern”). The store – which has 25 branches nationwide, including Edinburgh, Leeds, London, Glasgow, Bath and Sheffield – has so far failed to comment.
