Pay thy interns, campaigners warn Globe TheatreINTERN AWARE QUOTES SHAKESPEARE WHEN CHALLENGING CHIEF EXEC OVER UNPAID “COMMUNICATIONS INTERN” ROLE

Campaigners have quoted some of William Shakespeare’s most famous works when challenging the Globe Theatre over an unpaid “communications internship”  it advertised recently.

In a letter sent to the Globe’s chief executive Neil Constable, Intern Aware included phrases from Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet and Othello to issue a warning to the theatre over an unpaid internship advert posted recently online. Anticipating claims that the Globe cannot afford to pay its young staff a wage for the work, Intern Aware reminded the theatre it received £200 million in funding last year. Including handy footnotes so readers can see which of the Bard’s works they are quoting, the campaign group wrote:

Pay thy interns

Graduate Fog applauds Intern Aware’s creativity in trying to get through to the Globe by quoting the Bard. When skinflint employers don’t seem to be getting the message in regular English, it’s worth trying in a language you know they understand. HM Revenue and Customs have promised to investigate all cases passed to them, so we will let you know when we have news on whether the Globe will face a fine or prosecution over this internship…

*HAVE YOU INTERNED AT THE GLOBE?
What were your hours and what tasks were you given? Were you paid for your work? If not, were you happy to work for free, or do you think you should have received a wage for your contribution? If you haven’t interned at the Globe, tell us what you make of this story!
