How to get a job in journalism (Yes, even in 2010!)

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given about getting into journalism?
“A senior — and really nice — journalist I met drummed into me the importance of creating and maintaining work relationships and contacts. When I asked him why he was so helpful to new journalists, he said ‘I always help people I can see are serious about their career.’ But then he admitted his help wasn’t for purely selfless reasons — it gave him a new network of people who could help him! He said he was always surprised by how few people who ask to stay in touch actually did so.”

And the worst?
“It was from former journalists who told me, ‘Journalism is a dying industry — don’t get sucked in!’ They obviously weren’t happy with the way things were going. I listened but I’m always wary about negative career advice. It’s important to remember that there are always people who hate — and love — whatever they do. Their comments nearly made me rethink going into media and I’m glad I wasn’t scared off.”
