How to Get into Media

“Will things improve?”

Whether – and when – these industries will innovate and come up with a new way of working that’s profitable is anybody’s guess. Will the boom in live gigs be enough to save music? Will the iPad rescue magazines and newspapers? Could Advertiser Funded Programming (AFP) provide a lifeline for TV? Of course, even if innovation comes too late and the old ways do collapse, they’re likely to re-form with a new business model that fits the digital age. (Nobody is suggesting people will stop listening to music, consuming news or watching telly). But how quickly this will happen is anybody’s guess. It could take a long time for the dust to settle and new innovations to establish themselves. You might be 40 by the time newspaper publishing is a profitable career again. We just don’t know how things are going to pan out.

“So you’re saying I should give up my dream?”

Not necessarily – but Graduate Fog would advise you to be as flexible as possible on what your ‘dream’ might turn out to look like. The decision is yours – we just urge you to make sure it’s an informed decision. If people who are really well established in these industries are finding it tough and considering their options, Graduate Fog isn’t going to tell you to go for it and that all you need is passion – that’s just not true. Instead we urge you to look really objectively at the health of the industry you’re interested in and keep an open mind about the growth areas within it that might be more promising places to start your career.
